DeepSeek got the spotlight, but the deeper shift was the visibility of a broader Chinese AI push happening in parallel across multiple labs and product surfaces.

Quick definitions (plain English)

  • Open model: a model you can run or host outside a single closed platform, usually with more deployment flexibility.
  • Multipolar market: no single company or country fully controls capability direction or pricing power.
  • Inference cost: the real per-use cost to run a model in production.
  • Routing: choosing which model handles which request at runtime.

What changed around that moment

Before this window, a lot of teams still operated with an implicit assumption:

frontier quality lives in a few Western API endpoints, and everyone else follows.

  3. Benchmark headlines matter less than eval fit.
    Teams with weak evals will still pick by hype. Teams with strong evals can exploit real arbitrage.

  4. Global competition accelerates release cadence.
    You cannot plan product cycles as if model capability changes quarterly. Sometimes the ground shifts in weeks.

The China signal was speed plus pragmatism

What stood out to me in that period was not abstract “AI race” rhetoric. It was pragmatic shipping pressure:

  • push capability,
  • compress cost,
  • make distribution real,
  • iterate with production feedback.

That pattern tends to produce durable winners over time, even when early narratives ignore them.

A practical operating stance

My post-DeepSeek operating default is:

  • design model-agnostic product loops,
  • keep evals tied to user outcomes (not benchmark cosplay),
  • maintain at least two credible model lanes,
  • and treat provider choice as an ongoing operations decision, not a one-time bet.

If your product only works with one model vendor, you do not have a model strategy yet. You have a dependency.
