Many teams celebrate first-use events: user clicks AI button, user tries generated output, user shares a screenshot.
Those are curiosity signals, not adoption signals.
Use this metric instead
Measure time-to-second-meaningful-use.
If a user does not return for a second meaningful use quickly, your feature is likely novelty.

Instrumentation checklist
- Define the job the feature is meant to improve
- Define what a meaningful completed loop looks like
- Log first and second completion timestamps
- Track median time between those events by segment
What to do when this metric is weak
- Reduce setup friction before first output
- Improve output reliability for top 2 use cases
- Add examples that mirror user context
- Improve handoff from AI output to core workflow
