Many teams celebrate first-use events: user clicks AI button, user tries generated output, user shares a screenshot.

Those are curiosity signals, not adoption signals.

Use this metric instead

Measure time-to-second-meaningful-use.

If a user does not return for a second meaningful use quickly, your feature is likely novelty.

Instrumentation checklist

  1. Define the job the feature is meant to improve
  2. Define what a meaningful completed loop looks like
  3. Log first and second completion timestamps
  4. Track median time between those events by segment

  • Reduce setup friction before first output
  • Improve output reliability for top 2 use cases
  • Add examples that mirror user context
  • Improve handoff from AI output to core workflow
